Senate File 133 is not about leveling the playing field for student athletes. It’s about erasing and excluding trans people from participation in all aspects of public life.

By labeling medical care supported by every major medical association – including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association – as child abuse, Wyoming legislators are is compromising the health of trans youth in dangerous and potentially life-threatening ways.

The government censorship bill would silence students from speaking about their LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit family members, friends and neighbors and would create costly new liabilities for school districts.

Senate File 51 is not about leveling the playing field for student athletes. It’s about erasing and excluding trans people from participation in all aspects of public life.

Senate File 51 violates both the United States Constitution and Title IX of the Civil Rights Act, which protects all students – including those who are transgender – from discrimination based on sex.                                

Senate File 51 isn’t motivated by fairness concerns. This bill is motivated by ignorance, misinformation and fear – and it’s unfortunate that seems to be taking priority over the very important budget and redistricting process.

Senate File 51 is a distraction from the real priorities – including finalizing the once-in-a decade redistricting plan and spending American Rescue Plan Act funds from the Federal government – that Wyoming legislators must attack during the fast-paced, four-week budget session that starts Feb. 14.
