The Wyoming Campaign to End the Death Penalty has been working with community leaders of the last several months to finally end this racist and error-prone from of punishment.

Today, we hear from Deacon Mike, with the Catholic Dioceses of Cheyenne, to learn why they joined this campaign and support our mission to repeal the death penalty in Wyoming.

Send your note to Wyoming lawmakers now to ask they support Senate File 150!

Why do you support a death penalty repeal?

With maximum security prisons we can protect society from extremely dangerous people without resorting to the death penalty. Putting people to death, when it’s not in self-defense means we end up doing the very thing we condemn in the death row inmate.

How long have you been a death penalty repeal advocate?

Since 2015.

What would you tell someone who is on the fence about supporting a repeal?

This is not about excusing criminal behavior. Ask yourself if you would be able to carry out the sentence on someone who comes in with handcuffs, and is strapped down to a table? Someone who is defenseless? When we deny the human dignity of others, we degrade our own human dignity.

What toll, do you think, the death penalty has on communities?

Like all direct attacks on human life, the death penalty sends the message that life really is not sacred. The powerful majority, the loudest, and the strongest all get to decide the value of individual lives

What would you say to someone who thinks the death penalty delivers justice?

Who will deliver justice to us for killing the death row inmate? When does the cycle of violence stop?
