Background: House Bill 181 would regulate biometric data and license plate readers.

Our Stance: The ACLU of Wyoming supports House Bill 181.

This legislation would prohibit government entities, like law enforcement, from using biometric data, geolocation data and automated license-plate readers to identify and locate an individual. Communities like Cheyenne and Jackson are already utilizing Flock Safety cameras, which are continuously collecting data that can be kept and accessed by law enforcement agencies across the country. Public safety is the result of community-based tools and systems that directly and tangibly support residents — it is not, and has never been, a result of indiscriminate 24/7 surveillance.
