ABOUT THE JOB
The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Development Director in the ACLU of Wyoming, a national Chapter of the ACLU. The role is based in our Jackson, Wyoming office.
The ACLU has been at the center of several major civil liberties battles in the United States for more than 100 years. As an integral part of our team working to defend and expand civil liberties in Wyoming, this vital work depends on people like you who can foster a culture of philanthropy in our community and sustain its giving to the ACLU. The ACLU-WY/ND/SD defends civil liberties and civil rights in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wyoming through litigation, legislation, and public education.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Director will help donors accomplish their philanthropic goals and ambitions by providing support to a growing giving program with untapped potential. You’ll cultivate relationships with our existing major gifts prospects, manage a portfolio of approximately 100 individual and foundation donors capable of giving $10,000 or more, and you’ll provide guidance on the best ways to enhance and grow the capacity of the ACLU’s fundraising efforts in Wyoming.
COMPENSATION
The annual salary for this position is $121,214 (Level E). This salary is reflective of a position based in Jackson Hole, WY. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. Note that most of the salaries listed on our job postings reflect New York, NY salaries, where our National offices are headquartered.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Portfolio Management and Major Gifts
- Own and manage a portfolio of approximately 100 individual and foundation donors and prospects that have the capacity to make $10,000+ gifts and some qualification prospects
- Provide staffing support for the Executive Director’s portfolio
- Create individual goals for each person in the portfolio based on the donor’s history of giving and the organization’s knowledge of their potential and interests
- Develop and maintain comprehensive plans for each donor/prospect in the portfolio and execute those plans so individual donors are retained and upgraded
- Directly solicit major and planned gifts through individual, in-person, and virtual solicitation meetings
- Develop Key Performance Indicators and goals for the portfolio, analyze results and recommend changes/improvements as needed
- Secure, plan, and engage in face-to-face donor visits tied to annual key performance indicators
- Provide support to executive director in preparation for solicitation and stewardship opportunities
- Maintain working knowledge of national and local ACLU programmatic priorities, current issues, and events as they occur
- Maintain working knowledge of nationwide programmatic priorities and issues
- Partner with senior and program staff on donor engagement opportunities
- Prepare personalized proposals for individual prospects, and write cultivation and solicitation correspondence
- Work with appropriate staff to gather project information and develop materials directed at individual donors/prospects, including stewardship reports and highly personalized proposals
Donor Stewardship and Mid-Level Gifts
- Manage the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual and foundation donors making gifts of +$1,000
- Create and maximize targeted cultivation and stewardship opportunities through small events, special mailings, and communications for select donors/prospects in the portfolio
- Identify and qualify donors via basic research tools and reports
- Conduct outreach to new donors and prospects
Other Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the National office and ACLU staff across the country to maximize fundraising opportunities through national work
- Create donor strategy memos, letters, emails, and other pieces for donors, prospects, and other ACLU staff, as needed
- Execute special projects and other tasks as assigned by Executive Director
- Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work, embedding the values in program development, policy application, and organizational practices and processes

- Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in nonprofit fundraising, with progressive responsibility and a proven track record of soliciting and closing $10,000+ gifts
- Demonstrated ability to achieve overall revenue goal based on individual donor goals
- Proven retention and upgrading of donors
- Strong experience communicating effectively and respectfully on the phone and in-person with donors, board members, volunteers, staff, and the general public
- Experience leveraging database management systems to ensure complete, secure, and private donor records. Experience with Salesforce is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to simplify complex themes and myriad details into a short, compelling presentation or written piece
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines
- A driver’s license and availability to travel throughout the state required
- Ability to accommodate work during evenings and weekends when warranted
